It’s spring cleaning time! As the weather warms up, you may feel the need to deep clean your house. It’s the perfect opportunity to make your home feel fresh and clean. While cleaning out the garage and other tasks are certainly important, there’s one spring cleaning task you shouldn’t forget—washing the walls! Although they may not get as dirty as the floors, your interior walls still deserve some attention. Keep reading to learn why and how you should take care of your home’s walls.

Why You Need to Clean Your Walls

Compared to other cleaning projects you have around the house, cleaning the walls may not seem very important. However, think about how many times you touch your walls—when you turn the light on and off, when you turn a corner, when you look out a window. The oils and germs from your hands stay there and can build up over time. Even if your walls have a smooth texture, dust, grime, and bacteria can still accumulate on them. Cleaning your walls every once in a while can help you make your home a safer, more clean environment.

How to Clean Your Walls

Before you reach for a sponge, it is helpful to remove the dust from the walls. You can do this through using a broom for high areas and taking down any cobwebs at the corners. A dust cloth or rag should be enough for the rest of the walls. After you’ve dusted, you can then clean your walls using the following tips.

Be Smart

Not all walls can be cleaned the same way. You may use all-purpose cleaner and water on latex paints but not on oil-based paints. Dish soap and water work best for these types of paints. In addition to the type of paint, you must consider the finish. Flat, satin, and eggshell paints are less durable and therefore need a gentler cleaning agent. You also need to avoid scrubbing hard on these finishes or you could take paint off the walls. Semi-gloss and gloss are tough by comparison and can withstand some scrubbing if necessary.

Be Safe

If you are washing any outlet covers, light switches, or other potential electrical hazards on the walls, turn off the circuit breakers before you apply any liquid to these areas. You may also want to put down a drop cloth, towels, or another barrier on the floor or carpet to keep it from getting wet.

Be Prepared

For any home cleaning job, you should have the right supplies. Fortunately, the necessary supplies for cleaning walls are likely already in your house. You’ll need one bucket of warm water, which will be used for rinsing, and another container with your cleaning agent. You should also have a sponge and a dry cloth.

In the end, you probably don’t need to clean your walls very often. It doesn’t take long, but it can help the entire room feel tidier. So, this spring, devote some of your time and attention to the walls!
