There are few home improvement projects as exciting as exterior painting! It’s a chance to radically transform the appearance of your house, as well as boost its curbside appeal. However, if you live within an HOA community, you may be worried about your plans being rejected. Don’t fret, though – going into the process well-informed and prepared will ensure a very successful project. Continue reading below for a few questions you should keep in mind as you begin navigating the home exterior painting process.
Why Do HOAs Have Guidelines Concerning Exterior Paint?
Though it might seem silly or arbitrary for an HOA to enforce how homes are painted, there is a good reason for it. To put it simply, these rules and guidelines help to govern how a neighborhood looks and feels. For example, if homes in a neighborhood were painted using unconventional colors, and every home had its own particular theme, the entire community would feel disorganized and unappealing – and though we laud uniqueness in today’s society, it would ultimately cause the neighborhood to suffer.
That said, while general uniformity is desirable, duplication is not; they typically won’t expect (or allow) your home to identically match your neighbor’s. This means you can use your neighbor’s homes as inspiration for planning your own scheme; just don’t copy them!
Do HOA Painting Contractors Need to Be Approved?
You may have a trusted painting contractor that you’d like to go with but are worried that your HOA won’t allow you to use them. It’s true that some HOAs will designate specific companies for you to use for your project; however, this isn’t the norm. Most HOA boards will likely provide a list of vendors you could use, but most won’t care who does the job as long as it’s done correctly.
That said, you should still check with your HOA before you get started; you’ll need approval for your preferred scheme, and you can also inform them of who will be completing your project.
Can My HOA Make Me Repaint My Home?
The short answer here is yes, they absolutely can – and this shouldn’t be surprising if you’ve read your HOA community’s bylaws. If you paint your home’s exterior using a scheme or color that isn’t allowed by your HOA, they’re within their rights to make you repaint it. Needless to say, this will only make things more complicated, expensive, and time-consuming; so save yourself the headache and check with your HOA before you begin painting!
Remember, above all else, HOAs are there to maintain the integrity of the community, not issue fines without cause of care. As long as you go through the proper channels and communicate all of your painting plans clearly, you should be all set!
