Painting with Purpose: How to Paint a Room in One Day

There are very few design projects as exciting as interior painting – the chance to radically transform your home doesn’t come around too often, and though it might seem like a daunting task, the reward is absolutely worthwhile. Plus, with the right approach, did you know that you can sometimes carry out these types of projects in a single day? Continue reading for a few key considerations you should keep in mind if you’re hoping to paint one of the rooms within your home in a quick fashion!

Prepare the Room Beforehand

Either the day or night before you paint, you should spend some time preparing the room so that on the day of painting, you have far less to worry about! Move any furniture away from the walls and cover anything that’s too big to move. Be sure to also remove artwork and other décor from the walls, as well as any hooks, nails, cover plates, or anything else that isn’t part of the drywall. You’ll also want to spend some time cleaning and wiping down the walls being painted so that your tape will properly adhere, and you don’t run into any issues when applying your paint!

Use Appropriate Painting Methods

If you’re choosing to paint your walls yourself rather than relying on a team of professionals, you’ll want to keep the following things in mind:

  • Start by cutting in – Use a brush to “cut in” around the edges of the walls, ceiling, and corners; this creates a makeshift border that you can easily blend with your paint roller.
  • Roll in sections – After you’ve poured your paint into the tray and loaded your roller, you should try to paint your walls in smaller sections, working in an “M” or “W” shaped pattern. Blend into areas where you cut in with the brush.
  • Don’t forget the second coat – Most walls will require at least two coats of paint, and it helps to use paint with a built-in primer. Your first coat shouldn’t need more than an hour or two to try completely before you can begin with the second.
  • Don’t rush – If your work is sloppy, your results will look subpar. There’s no need to rush to try to complete your project in a day!

Be Ready for an Extensive Cleanup Process

Once the painting is done, you aren’t completely finished yet – the cleanup still remains! Be sure that you’re properly disposing of all trash, including tape, ruined tarps, empty cans, etc. You should also rinse all of your brushes and rollers before storing them. Of course, you’ll also need to move your furniture back, replace outlet covers, and make things as they were before you started. Depending on the scope of your project, this could all take one to several hours – but in any case, don’t neglect this step as you won’t be able to truly appreciate your results until you’ve cleaned up!

Lastly, you should keep in mind that it simply isn’t always feasible to find a free day to complete an entire interior painting project. Not to mention, if this is the first time you’ve tried it yourself, you might not feel too confident. This is when you should seek the help of an experienced team of painters; there’s no sense in trying to rush things yourself when they can carry out the task just as quickly and ensure beautiful results!
