When you bought your older home, you knew it came with some design choices from the past, but how do you know which ones are truly outdated and should be brought to modern tastes and which might make a comeback? While no one can tell for sure what home trends may rise again from the past, there are certain fads that are unlikely to gain favor a second time. Here are some relating to interior painting that you should definitely change if they are still in your home!
Wood Paneling
Although very popular in the 1970s, wood paneling on the walls makes the den, or any other room for that matter, feel dark and dreary. Instead of having wood everywhere, you can choose furniture or wood décor that bring in a feeling of natural elements without overwhelming the space.
Avocado Green
Even if you like to avocado toast for breakfast in the morning, it doesn’t mean you should use that color in designing your home. This color was extremely overused in the past, and it can turn your space into a time capsule. Small accents of this color as a secondary may be permissible, but avoid using it as a primary color for your rooms.
Sponge Walls
In an effort to make the walls look more interesting in the 1990s, homeowners took a sponge and “carefully” blotted various colors of paint onto the walls. While this created the illusion of texture, this design trend is not likely to make a comeback. Rather than having spongy dots on the walls, a clean, smooth wall with a chic color is much more preferable.
Popcorn Ceilings
Few design elements date a house more than popcorn ceilings. This texture not only attracts the wrong type of attention, but it can also allow dust to build up, particularly around the fan. Needless to say, it’s not a good look! It’s definitely worth removing and replacing with normal texturing. If you want to draw the eye upward to the ceiling, choose a bold color to create a striking effect instead.
Matching Wallpaper and Carpets
At one point in history, it was common to walk into a room where the wallpaper and carpet had the exact same color. Don’t expect this trend to come back into favor any time soon because it is possible to have too much of a good thing! Rather than overwhelming the space with only one color or an outdated, patterned wallpaper, most of the time, the flooring is more neutral, allowing you to have more fun with the wall color.
While finding these bygone designs in older houses still happens, you don’t have to live in the past. You can change and update your home, even in simple ways like painting, to make it feel more modern and yours. It’s time to put these old fads in the past and look ahead to what’s next for your home!
