In an ideal world, you could adapt your house to match your idea of a dream home. Chances are you envision spacious rooms in your dream home, but real life can leave you with less square footage than you’d like. Is there anything you can do? Absolutely!

Although demolition may not be in your budget, you can work with the spaces you already have. Here are five simple ways to make your small rooms seem much larger without breaking the bank.

Clear Away Clutter

Nothing makes a room look and feel even smaller than it really is than having clutter. Too much stuff in the room can evoke a crowded, claustrophobic feeling. As a result, removing excess objects from the room, shows that there actually is enough space in the room. Include just the furniture and décor you need and limit the number of knick-knacks to reduce the clutter.

Put in a Mirror

In most cases, you may not be able to physically add square footage to a room, but you can create the illusion of more space by hanging or setting a mirror in the room. Especially if you position the mirror to reflect the light source, the room can look more expansive than it actually is.

Add Light

Speaking of light sources, rooms with plenty of light seem larger than dark rooms. If you’re not able to allow natural light into the room, put a lamp or light fixture into the room to add warm light to the area. Not only will this provide a more welcoming ambiance, but it will also illuminate corners and other areas, showing that the room has more space available.

Go Green

Although you should remove excess clutter, it’s a good idea to have a plant or two in a small room. Not only are plants beautiful, they literally add air to the space! No matter the room’s paint color or décor, plants make a refreshing addition and create a more comfortable setting.

Paint the Walls a Light Color

You’d be surprised at how much difference adjusting the paint for a small room can make. Again, dark rooms tend to feel more tightly packed in, which is why you should not paint the walls a dark color. Lighter shades for interior paint help to reflect light, expanding the appearance of the small room and helping you feel more comfortable in a tighter space.

Even though you aren’t physically changing how much space is in the room, you can transform the room into a more usable, comfortable area to be. Taking and applying these tips can help you turn your house into your dream home.
